2. "I never tried," said Carrie.
3. He had stopped his trifling before the mirror now and crossedover to her. For the first time Carrie felt as if she must moveaway from him.
4. "Well, I must see more of you to-day. I'm just going in here forbreakfast. Come in when you're through."
5. "I'd get that idea out of my head, if I were you. It's a lotmore difficult than you think."
6. That little student had mastered her part to her ownsatisfaction, much as she trembled for her fate when she shouldonce face the gathered throng, behind the glare of thefootlights. She tried to console herself with the thought that ascore of other persons, men and women, were equally tremulousconcerning the outcome of their efforts, but she could notdisassociate the general danger from her own individualliability. She feared that she would forget her lines, that shemight be unable to master the feeling which she now feltconcerning her own movements in the play. At times she wishedthat she had never gone into the affair; at others, she trembledlest she should be paralysed with fear and stand white andgasping, not knowing what to say and spoiling the entireperformance.

1. "That's right," said the drummer.
2. "Where can I go?"
3. "What's the matter with him?"
4. He gazed at her dress, then at her hair, where a becoming hat wasset jauntily, then into her eyes, which she took all occasion toavert. Evidently he expected to restore their old friendship atonce and without modification.
5. "Yes, who told you?"
6. Carrie had bathed and was waiting when he arrived. She lookedrefreshed--more delightful than ever, but reserved. Since he hadgone she had resumed somewhat of her cold attitude towards him.Love was not blazing in her heart. He felt it, and his troublesseemed increased. He could not take her in his arms; he did noteven try. Something about her forbade it. In part his opinionwas the result of his own experiences and reflections belowstairs.

1. Accordingly, when he arrived, he was disappointed to find Carrieout. He trifled about, hoping that she was somewhere in theneighbourhood and would soon return. He constantly listened, expecting to hear her foot on the stair.
2. "Now, I'll tell you what you do. You go down and see about it.It'll be fun for you. The rest of the company isn't going to beany good. They haven't any experience. What do they know abouttheatricals?"
3. A week or so later Drouet strolled into Fitzgerald and Moy's,spruce in dress and manner.
4. He pressed her hand gently and she tried to withdraw it. At thishe held it fast, and she no longer protested. Then he slippedthe greenbacks he had into her palm, and when she began toprotest, he whispered:
5. Drouet listened to her in astonishment. This was something new.
6. A man of Hurstwood's age and temperament is not subject to theillusions and burning desires of youth, but neither has he thestrength of hope which gushes as a fountain in the heart ofyouth. Such an atmosphere could not incite in him the cravingsof a boy of eighteen, but in so far as they were excited, thelack of hope made them proportionately bitter. He could not failto notice the signs of affluence and luxury on every hand. Hehad been to New York before and knew the resources of its folly. In part it was an awesome place to him, for here gathered allthat he most respected on this earth--wealth, place, and fame. The majority of the celebrities with whom he had tipped glassesin his day as manager hailed from this self-centred and populousspot. The most inviting stories of pleasure and luxury had beentold of places and individuals here. He knew it to be true thatunconsciously he was brushing elbows with fortune the livelongday; that a hundred or five hundred thousand gave no one theprivilege of living more than comfortably in so wealthy a place.Fashion and pomp required more ample sums, so that the poor manwas nowhere. All this he realised, now quite sharply, as hefaced the city, cut off from his friends, despoiled of his modestfortune, and even his name, and forced to begin the battle forplace and comfort all over again. He was not old, but he was notso dull but that he could feel he soon would be. Of a sudden, then, this show of fine clothes, place, and power took onpeculiar significance. It was emphasised by contrast with hisown distressing state.

1. "Now," he said, getting Carrie and himself comfortably settled,"what will you have?"
2. "Did I do so very bad?"
4、 "Oh, nothing," she answered; "I've always thought so."
5、 They decided to move Friday, which was two days away. Now thatthe thing was settled, Carrie's heart misgave her. She felt verymuch like a criminal in the matter. Each day looking atHurstwood, she had realised that, along with the disagreeablenessof his attitude, there was something pathetic.

"That's the girl," said Hurstwood fondly. "Now, remember,"shaking an affectionate finger at her, "your best."

There was a general shuffle and murmur of approval.

"Lola," she said, visiting her friend, "I think I'll come."

      In time she began to feel that a change had come about, and thatshe was not in his confidence. He was evidently secretive andkept his own counsel. She found herself asking him questionsabout little things. This is a disagreeable state to a woman.Great love makes it seem reasonable, sometimes plausible, butnever satisfactory. Where great love is not, a more definite andless satisfactory conclusion is reached.}

"The offices are up those steps," said the bluecoat. His facewas a very neutral thing to contemplate. In his heart of hearts,he sympathised with the strikers and hated this "scab." In hisheart of hearts, also, he felt the dignity and use of the policeforce, which commanded order. Of its true social significance,he never once dreamed. His was not the mind for that. The twofeelings blended in him--neutralised one another and him. Hewould have fought for this man as determinedly as for himself, and yet only so far as commanded. Strip him of his uniform, andhe would have soon picked his side.

Hurstwood saw her depart with some faint stirrings of shame, which were the expression of a manhood rapidly becomingstultified. He sat a while, and then it became too much. He gotup and put on his hat.

She shook her head as if in deep thought."Then why not settle the whole thing, once and for all?"

They filed out, and he affected to take no notice of her. Alean-faced, rather commonplace woman recognised Carrie on theplatform and hurried forward.
