1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Is that so?" exclaimed Hurstwood, otherwise concealing hisastonishment. "Alone?" he added.
2. He gave her the number.
3. Now, as on each preceding day, letters were handed her by thedoorman at the Casino. This was a feature which had rapidlydeveloped since Monday. What they contained she well knew. MASHNOTES were old affairs in their mildest form. She rememberedhaving received her first one far back in Columbia City. Sincethen, as a chorus girl, she had received others--gentlemen whoprayed for an engagement. They were common sport between her andLola, who received some also. They both frequently made light ofthem.
4. "Well?" he said, not venturing to ask what news.
5. "Schaeffer and Ryan."
6. "You'll have to send in your card."

1. He went out and climbed on the platform. The instructor took itfor granted that no preliminaries were needed.
2. "Saturday?" asked Carrie.
3. "We might try it," he suggested. "I've been thinking that ifwe'd take a smaller flat down town and live economically for ayear, I would have enough, with what I have invested, to open agood place. Then we could arrange to live as you want to."
4. A cab had stopped. Some gentleman in evening dress reached out abill to the captain, who took it with simple thanks and turnedaway to his line. There was a general craning of necks as thejewel in the white shirt front sparkled and the cab moved off.Even the crowd gaped in awe.
5. When he had finished it, he stood holding it in his hands. Theaudacity of the thing took his breath. It roused his ire also--the deepest element of revolt in him. His first impulse was towrite but four words in reply--"Go to the devil!"--but hecompromised by telling the boy that there would be no reply. Then he sat down in his chair and gazed without seeing, contemplating the result of his work. What would she do aboutthat? The confounded wretch! Was she going to try to bulldoze himinto submission? He would go up there and have it out with her, that's what he would do. She was carrying things with too high ahand. These were his first thoughts.
6. He decided he would lose no time living in hotels but would renta flat. Accordingly he told Carrie, and she agreed.

1. "Oh, no," answered Carrie.
2. "Hold on," he said, calling her back. "Give me your name andaddress. We want girls occasionally."
3. In about an hour and three-quarters the boy returned. He hadevidently delivered the package, for, as he came up, he made nosign of taking anything out of his pocket.
4. Chapter XX
5. Without being clear, there was something in the thought which heobjected to. He did not believe any more, after three years ofobservation, that Carrie would ever do anything great in thatline. She seemed too simple, too yielding. His idea of the artwas that it involved something more pompous. If she tried to geton the stage she would fall into the hands of some cheap managerand become like the rest of them. He had a good idea of what hemeant by THEM. Carrie was pretty. She would get along allright, but where would he be?
6. "No, where?" said Drouet.

1. "You can see for yourself if you're any judge of the liquortrade," said the owner. "This is only one of the two places Ihave. The other is down in Nassau Street. I can't tend to themboth alone. If I had some one who knew the business thoroughly Iwouldn't mind sharing with him in this one and letting him manageit."
2. At last it came to the part where the lover exclaimed, "Be to meas you used to be."
3. At that hour, when Broadway is wont to assume its mostinteresting aspect, a peculiar individual invariably took hisstand at the corner of Twenty-sixth Street and Broadway--a spotwhich is also intersected by Fifth Avenue. This was the hourwhen the theatres were just beginning to receive their patrons.Fire signs announcing the night's amusements blazed on everyhand. Cabs and carriages, their lamps gleaming like yellow eyes, pattered by. Couples and parties of three and four freelymingled in the common crowd, which poured by in a thick stream, laughing and jesting. On Fifth Avenue were loungers--a fewwealthy strollers, a gentleman in evening dress with his lady onhis arm, some club-men passing from one smoking-room to another.Across the way the great hotels showed a hundred gleamingwindows, their cafes and billiard-rooms filled with acomfortable, well-dressed, and pleasure-loving throng. All aboutwas the night, pulsating with the thoughts of pleasure andexhilaration--the curious enthusiasm of a great city bent uponfinding joy in a thousand different ways.
4、 "Why don't you see him," suggested Lola, "and hear what he has tosay?"
5、 Hurstwood moved on, wondering. The sight of the large, brightcoin pleased him a little. He remembered that he was hungry andthat he could get a bed for ten cents. With this, the idea ofdeath passed, for the time being, out of his mind. It was onlywhen he could get nothing but insults that death seemed worthwhile.

In the bedroom, off the front room, was Carrie's trunk, bought byDrouet, and in the wardrobe built into the wall quite an array ofclothing--more than she had ever possessed before, and of verybecoming designs. There was a third room for possible use as akitchen, where Drouet had Carrie establish a little portable gasstove for the preparation of small lunches, oysters, Welshrarebits, and the like, of which he was exceedingly fond; and, lastly, a bath. The whole place was cosey, in that it waslighted by gas and heated by furnace registers, possessing also asmall grate, set with an asbestos back, a method of cheerfulwarming which was then first coming into use. By her industryand natural love of order, which now developed, the placemaintained an air pleasing in the extreme.
