1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Go to the devil, you old hag," he half muttered as he staredround upon the scattered company.
2. "Well," he observed to himself, "I came out of that all right."
3. "There," she said playfully, pointing a finger at him.
4. "Yet, what have I got to do with it?" she thought. "Oh, whyshould I be made to worry?"
5. "I believe I'll turn in," said the man.
6. "This store closes at one on Saturdays," was a pleasing andsatisfactory legend to see upon doors which she felt she ought toenter and inquire for work. It gave her an excuse, and afterencountering quite a number of them, and noting that the clockregistered 12.15, she decided that it would be no use to seekfurther to-day, so she got on a car and went to Lincoln Park. There was always something to see there--the flowers, theanimals, the lake--and she flattered herself that on Monday shewould be up betimes and searching. Besides, many things mighthappen between now and Monday.

1. The following morning the train pulled safely into Montreal andthey stepped down, Hurstwood glad to be out of danger, Carriewondering at the novel atmosphere of the northern city. Longbefore, Hurstwood had been here, and now he remembered the nameof the hotel at which he had stopped. As they came out of themain entrance of the depot he heard it called anew by a busman.
2. "Not a bit. All you need is a little more ginger. Do it as youshowed me. Get that toss of your head you had the other night."
3. There was much more passing now than the mere words indicated. He recognised the indescribable thing that made up forfascination and beauty in her. She realised that she was ofinterest to him from the one standpoint which a woman bothdelights in and fears. Her manner was simple, though for the veryreason that she had not yet learned the many little affectationswith which women conceal their true feelings. Some things shedid appeared bold. A clever companion--had she ever had one--would have warned her never to look a man in the eyes sosteadily.
4. The boy hastened away and the manager fell to his musings. Nowhe had done it. There was no use speculating over that. He wasbeaten for to-night and he might just as well make the best ofit. But, oh, the wretchedness of being forced this way! He couldsee her meeting the boy at the door and smiling sardonically. She would take the envelope and know that she had triumphed. Ifhe only had that letter back he wouldn't send it. He breathedheavily and wiped the moisture from his face.
5. "I suppose your people will be here to meet you?" he said. "Letme carry your grip."
6. He waited and waited, while the man talked on.

1. "'Trying to steal,' said the child.
2. Amid the babel of voices, Hurstwood heard one close beside him.
3. "When did you get home?" he asked foolishly.
4. "Good-morning, sir," said the latter, thinking at first that hewas encountering one of his out-of-town customers.
5. "Will you go over and get some canned peaches?" she askedHurstwood, laying down a two-dollar bill.
6. The place smelled of the oil of the machines and the new leather--a combination which, added to the stale odours of the building, was not pleasant even in cold weather. The floor, thoughregularly swept every evening, presented a littered surface. Notthe slightest provision had been made for the comfort of theemployees, the idea being that something was gained by givingthem as little and making the work as hard and unremunerative aspossible. What we know of foot-rests, swivel-back chairs,dining-rooms for the girls, clean aprons and curling ironssupplied free, and a decent cloak room, were unthought of. Thewashrooms were disagreeable, crude, if not foul places, and thewhole atmosphere was sordid.

1. "Well," he said, as he took her arm--and there was an exuberanceof good-fellowship in the word which fairly warmed the cockles ofher heart.
2. On coming down from his room at six, he looked carefully about tosee if Drouet was present and then went out to lunch. He couldscarcely eat, however, he was so anxious to be about his errand. Before starting he thought it well to discover where Drouet wouldbe, and returned to his hotel.
3. The bath was a handsome affair, done in white enamel, with alarge, blue-bordered stone tub and nickel trimmings. It wasbright and commodious, with a bevelled mirror set in the wall atone end and incandescent lights arranged in three places.
4、 "With some relatives," she answered.
5、 She asked Minnie for ink and paper, which were upon the mantel inthe dining-room, and when the latter had gone to bed at ten, gotout Drouet's card and wrote him.

Not only did Carrie feel the drag of desire for all which was newand pleasing in apparel for women, but she noticed too, with atouch at the heart, the fine ladies who elbowed and ignored her, brushing past in utter disregard of her presence, themselveseagerly enlisted in the materials which the store contained.Carrie was not familiar with the appearance of her more fortunatesisters of the city. Neither had she before known the nature andappearance of the shop girls with whom she now compared poorly. They were pretty in the main, some even handsome, with an air ofindependence and indifference which added, in the case of themore favoured, a certain piquancy. Their clothes were neat, inmany instances fine, and wherever she encountered the eye of oneit was only to recognise in it a keen analysis of her ownposition--her individual shortcomings of dress and that shadow ofmanner which she thought must hang about her and make clear toall who and what she was. A flame of envy lighted in her heart. She realised in a dim way how much the city held--wealth,fashion, ease--every adornment for women, and she longed fordress and beauty with a whole heart.
